Winstone Wallboards
Factory construction
The construction of the Winstone Wallboards Gib factory in Tauriko (known as Project Basalt), was completed in September 2023. The project involved a base build, contracted to Fletcher Building, and a plant and equipment install, that was contracted to a Canadian plasterboard equipment specialist, Gypsum Technologies.
We were the lead mechanical installer for Gypsum Technologies, and were responsible for the plant installation as well as the associated ducting, piping and accessways.
We also assembled and installed all flatpack items on-site, and fabricated cyclones, the kettle jacket and various other plant items off-site and transported them from our workshop to the Tauriko site.
This large project brought together multiple contractors and crews. As lead mechanical installer we had 64 employees onsite at the project’s peak, and worked closely with the Fletcher’s team to deliver an exceptional safety record (0 LTI and 4.86 TRIFR across more than 100,000 man-hours).
"The Tauriko plant and equipment install was by no means a straightforward build. It involved massive amounts of collaboration, planning and interface with base build contractors, which CMS managed well.”

Stolthaven Terminals
Terminal Expansion
CMS worked on the Terminal Expansion at the Stothaven site at the Port of Tauranga from September 2019 through to its completion in August 2020. The chemical storage site is a hazardous facility, with flammable fumes in areas around the site.
Robust Health and Safety processes were essential. There were separate inductions, and extra permitting required to work in the hazardous areas, and these were strictly enforced.
CMS was contracted to fabricate, install and test all the chemical lines to B31.3 standard, install all mechanical equipment (pumps, valves etc), fabricate and install all service lines and fabricate and install pipe bridge, pipe supports and walkways to the appropriate standards.
The period of the project included the height of the pandemic lockdowns in New Zealand. CMS adapted quickly to put the necessary processes in place to be able to work in a Level 3 COVID lockdown alongside other contractors.
A month was lost to the Level 4 lockdown, but once work was underway again, the project was accelerated to meet a specific deadline - a ship with chemicals that had to be unloaded to a timeframe. We met the deadline, finishing on time and on budget, excluding variations and acceleration costs, with zero LTI.
"Working with CMS has been a hassle-free and professional experience. Needing a well-trained and experienced contractor to work on an expansion project for a major hazard facility, CMS offered what we needed and finished on time and budget."

Ballance Agri-Nutrients Limited
Maintenance and Shutdown Services
We perform regular maintenance at Ballance Bay Of Plenty sites. The sites store and process hazardous chemicals and require strict adherence to health and safety protocols.
We perform scheduled shut work as required, using an agile approach to ensure the work is always completed in the specified timeframe despite any emerging challenges. Communication is the key.
We’re open and honest allowing us to work with Ballance to quickly and effectively deal with emergent work. Together we also plan for contingencies allowing us to consistently deliver outstanding results, and resources when needed.
“The working relationship between companies and their preferred contractors requires open and honest discussions, when working with Contract Mechanical Services over many years, I have found this to be so easy as the team works with you so you get the desired results. Safety, flexibility, reliability and pride are words that come to mind when CMS is involved, out of the box thinking to develop and resolve plant problems comes easy for them. It has been my pleasure to work alongside CMS in the past and long may this continue.”

Mercury Energy
Karāpiro Gate Replacement
As part of Mercury’s ongoing Hydro Rehabilitation Project, AEC was engaged to install three new gates and a new hydraulic operating system at their Karāpiro site. A joint PropellWorks team of CMS and AEC were deployed and successfully installed the first and second 45t gates, complying with very precise specifications.
The multi-year project is ongoing, and work is proceeding on embedding the steelwork for the third gate.
A key part of our success on this project has been our ability to maintain a stable team of hydro-experienced crews, who have retained on-site knowledge for best practice and continuous improvement.
“We are pleased with the high-quality work produced by AEC. Together, we have successfully installed and commissioned the first two intake gates and are planning for the third in 2025. “AEC’s important contribution to this project will help us ensure the Karāpiro hydro station can continue to produce renewable energy for New Zealand for another 50 years.”

IXOM
Planned plant maintenance
We’ve performed ongoing maintenance for IXOM since 2010 - completing five shutdowns per year across their Mt. Maunganui, Morrinsville and Kinleith Chemical Process Plants.
Our crews are knowledgable and efficient and work meticulously to avoid unnecessary plant wear and tear in the short term, and minimise the chance of a breakdown over the long term.
In addition to our ongoing maintenance work we also completed a number of major projects for IXOM. We upgraded the Chemnet Terminal in Timaru and the Chemnet Fiji Sodium Hypochlorite Plant in Suva. We also replaced the plant reactor at the Chemnet PAC site in Morrinsville and upgraded the Chemnet Stormwater System in Mt. Maunganui.
“CMS is one of IXOM’s valuable partners and have supported our mechanical requirements at our industrial production facilities for many years. Not only is the quality of their work and attention to detail world class, but their service and innovative solutions have played a significant role in our success. The staff at CMS understand the value and opportunities that strong partnerships create, and we look forward to navigating this challenging and ever-changing industrial landscape with them for many years to come.”
